Regular Spanish Verbs

To conjugate the regular verbs in the present tense of the indicative mood, you take the infinitive form of the verb as it is found in the dictionary, you remove the group endings (-ar, -er, -ir) and replace them with the personal endings. The stem of the verb remains the same.

TIP: Most Spanish verbs fall under the -ar group.

Irregular Spanish Verbs

With the many irregular Spanish verbs, the regular group ending rules apply to the verbs. In many cases, you are going to find spelling changes in the stem of the verbs in their personal forms. There are some irregular Spanish verbs where the irregularity in the present tense of the indicative mood is only present in the first person. The rest of the persons follow a regular pattern. With other irregular Spanish verbs you will find the irregularity within certain vowels of the stem of the verb. The changes will affect to yo(I), tú(you), él/ella/usted(he,she,it) and the ellos, ellas(they) forms.

The vowels that change are e-ie, o-ue, e-i and u-ue. Other irregular verbs do not follow any rules and you will have to learn them by heart.

Verbos Regulares

Para conjugar los verbos regulares en el tiempo presente del modo indicativo, cogemos la forma de infinitivo del verbo tal y como nos la encontramos en el diccionario, le quitamos la terminación de infinitivo (-ar, -er o –ir) y la sustituimos por la terminación personal correspondiente. La raíz del verbo se queda igual. Las terminaciones personales son las siguientes para el tiempo presente del modo indicativo:

Nota: La mayoría de los verbos españoles pertenecen al grupo terminado en –ar.

Verbos Irregulares

Con los verbos irregulares utilizamos las mismas terminaciones personales que con los verbos regulares. En muchos casos con los verbos irregulares usted va a encontrar cambios en la ortografía de la raíz del verbo en sus formas personales. Hay algunos verbos irregulares españoles en los que la irregularidad en el Presente del Modo Indicativo sólo está presente en la primera persona. El resto de las personas sigue un patrón regular. Con otros verbos irregulares españoles encontraremos la irregularidad en algunas vocales de la raíz del verbo. Los cambios afectarán a las personas yo(I), tú(you), él/ella/usted(he,she,it) y ellos, ellas(they).

Las vocales que cambian son: e-ie, o-ue, e-i y u-ue. Otros verbos irregulares no siguen ninguna regla y nos los tendremos que estudiar de memoria.
